How net gold weight is determined

Net gold weight is the weight of the gold itself, after non-gold elements such as stones, lac, pearls or enamel are accounted for. It is the figure on which value is based, so it is usually lower than the gross weight shown on the scale.

Gross weight vs net weight

Gross weight is everything on the scale together. Net gold weight is only the gold. Jewellery with stones, pearls, glass beads, lac fill or hanging threads will have a gross weight higher than its net gold weight.

How the difference is handled

  • Stones may be removed and weighed, or their weight estimated.
  • The weight difference is subtracted to reach net weight.
  • Ask the buyer to explain which method is used and show you the figures.

Why it matters

If a buyer calculates on gross weight, you may be overpaid for non-gold material. If they overstate deductions, you may be underpaid. Asking for clarity on weight protects both sides.
