Quick comparison
- 24K: about 99.9% gold (fineness 999). Very soft; mostly used for coins and bars.
- 22K: about 91.6% gold (fineness 916). A balance of richness and strength; widely used in Indian jewellery.
- 18K: 75% gold (fineness 750). More durable; often used for stone-set and designer pieces.
Why not make everything in 24K?
Pure gold is very soft and bends or scratches easily. Mixing it with other metals gives jewellery the strength to hold its shape and hold stones securely.
When selling
Higher karat means more gold content, so the value per gram is higher. Because the karat stamp on an older piece may not match its actual content, the piece is tested before a value is given.
