  1. 01

    Where deductions come from

Stones, lac and enamel are not gold, so their weight is excluded. Impurities discovered in testing change the purity figure. Some buyers also account for refining loss when scrap is melted.

  2. 02

    What is reasonable to ask

Ask for the deduction in grams or percentage, and ask why it applies. A clear answer is a good sign.

    • Is the deduction for stones, impurities or melting?
    • How is it measured?
    • Is it applied to the weight or to the amount?
    • Does it change if I only sell part of the piece?
  3. 03

    Net weight is the safeguard

If net gold weight is stated clearly and purity is tested openly, most disputes about deductions disappear.
